Today’s Classic Cameras updates

A review of the Kodak Instamatic Reflex, a 3-page ad for it, and a review of the Rollei 35. And, I grabbed a Taron Marquis on eBay, as the only bidder, and went ahead and made a page for it with a review. The camera itself should be here after Christmas. The Taron Marquis was the first camera with a built-in CdS [...] Read the rest of this entry »

Focus on Norman Stauffer

Most of the initial autofocus patents were awarded to Honeywell, and most of those were for inventions of Normal Stauffer, who worked at Honeywell’s Denver office. I’ve added lots of material about two autofocus cameras, the Konica CD35AF, which was the first autofocus 35mm, and the Minolta Maxxum 7000, which was the first 35mm SLR with in-body automatic [...] Read the rest of this entry »

Old Popular Photography magazines needed

Much of the material on my Classic Cameras site comes from old magazines, especially Popular Photography, which I read over-and-over during the 1960s. My own magazines are long gone, but I’ve been acquiring replacements on eBay, with great success. My collection is about 50% complete for the late 1930s and 1940s, nearly 100% for the 1950s, and pretty good for [...] Read the rest of this entry »

For a change, photos not of a camera!

Yes, I do sometimes point my camera at something other than another camera! Here are three shots from a recent vacation in and around Durango, Colorado. The one above was taken with my Nikon D70 converted to infrared, the ones below with my D700. There are a few more photos from that trip on my [...] Read the rest of this entry »

Canon III was a REALLY close Leica copy

Of course, this is widely known, but just how close a copy wasn’t apparent to me until I put my Leica IIIc and my Canon IIIc side-by-side: Also new today are a review of the Olympus Pen F and ads for the Canon Pellix and the Nikkorex Zoom 35. Read the rest of this entry »

Pictures of the Canon AL-1

Photos of the Canon AL-1, my newest arrival, have been posted on my Classic Cameras site, and I moved the article on the AL-1 from the Pentax ME-F page to the AL-1 page, since it’s mostly about the AL-1. This morning I grabbed an original Konica Rangefinder on eBay, so that will be my next addition. And, I’ve [...] Read the rest of this entry »

Lots of new material…

On my Classic Cameras site, an original Exakta VX brochure, and ads/articles/reviews on the Konica Auto-Reflex, the Nikkorex Zoom, the Polaroid Model 95, the Minolta Maxxum 7000, the Konica C35 AF, the Polaroid SX-70 Sonar One Step, the Anscoflex, the Kodak Medalist II, the Instamatic 100, and the Fotron. Single-Lens Reflex Cameras - 1954 Popular Photography Camerette

This long, wonderfully illustrated, article (12+ pages), which appeared in the September 1954 issue of Popular Photography, explains everything important to know about SLRs—as of 1954, that is. The first recognizably modern 35mm SLR, the Pentax Original, was still three years away. Automatic exposure and automatic focus were far into the future. To give you an idea of how early [...] Read the rest of this entry »

Updated Classic Cameras site

I’ve revamped the look, with new fonts and a new logo, and also added indicators (R and/or B) to indicate which cameras have reviews/articles and brochures. Also newly posted today are reviews/articles about the Kodak INSTAMATIC 100, Miranda DR, and Olympus Pen F, and some new ads, too. The link is at right. Read the rest of this entry »
