Beta of ImageIngesterPro Version 3 for Windows; Mac updated also

June 10, 2008

I've just posted a beta of this new version, which is a free update from Version 2. The Mac version was posted last week, but there's a new update posted.

Use this version with extreme caution, as it's likely to have bugs.

Beta of ImageIngesterPro Version 3

June 5, 2008

Updated 25-June-2008

I've just posted a beta of this new version, which is a free update from Version 2.

Use this version with extreme caution, as it's likely to have bugs.

These are the principal changes from Version 2:

  1. [Updated] You can now ingest up to 8 card simultaneously.
  2. Preference Sets and the entire Preferences panel are gone. Instead, most settings are shown on the main window and settings can be saved with what are now called presets. Panels with settings that used to be on the Preferences panel are now brought up with Set buttons on the main window.
  3. Unlike with the old Preference Sets, settings are saved in a preset only if you explicitly choose the Save command for that preset, which is also how they operate in apps such as Photoshop, Lightroom, the Mac print dialog, and so on. Changes you make are used for ingestions as long as IIP is running, but are forgotten if they're not saved.
  4. All settings, with a few exceptions like starting number, can be saved in a Master Preset. In addition, groups of settings can be saved in Destination, File Handling, Metadata, and Keywords presets. If you choose one of the aforementioned non-Master presets, the appropriate settings are affected, but they are not saved in the Master preset unless you explicitly save the Master preset. If you subsequently change a non-Master preset, the new settings do not automatically affect the Master preset. That is, the Master preset does not refer to the name of the other presets, but only the specific settings values that they may have effected.
  5. There are now three metadata templates: Photographer, Content, and Rights, instead of the six tabs on the old IPTC panel. These do not behave like presets, in that you can't change anything without saving it in a template. The Metadata and Master presets record the names of the three templates, not their contents. So, if you change the data in a Photographer template, it will affect any preset that refers to that particular template. This makes it easy, for example, to update a photographer's email or phone number—it's not necessary to go in and change a dozen pesets that refer to that template.
  6. There's no way to change the underlying XMP template, still called ImageIngester-IPTC, and that template hasn't changed. There might be a way to do this with a subsequent beta of Version 3.
  7. The destination folder drop-down is gone, as is the entire destination folder feature.
  8. The starting number is a global property that isn't stored in any preset, although its value is remembered.
  9. The Quick Fields user interface has been redesigned. The macro is the same: {@qf.label}, but it's no longer necessary to set the labels on a preferences panel. IIP now automatically shows the labels on the main window when they're used. If you have more than 8, you get an error message. You can use a Quick Field macro in any metadata template or in the file or folder naming.
  10. The Metadata panel is gone. Everything that was on it is now in the main window.
  11. The global update check and log preferences are temporarily gone, and default to always on.
  12. All of the ingestion parameters are now stored in the database ingestion record and are viewable by a new Details button on the database panel. They also appear in the log.
  13. The Examine panel now shows values of IPTC metadata using whatever templates are set. These values are not necessarily the same as what's in the image being examined.
  14. The actual ingestion engine hasn't changed at all, and there are no new ingestion features.

Many more changes are planned for Version 3. A Windows version will be posted in around a month.

Please send me questions and comments or, better, post them in the ImageIngester section of The DAM Forum so everyone can see them.

Free ImageIngester No Longer Available

June 3, 2008

As previously announced, Version 2.3 of ImageIngester, the last version to provide a free non-Pro mode, is no longer available for download. You may continue to use any version you already have as long as you like, but no updates will be provided.

ImageIngesterPro is still under active development, and a beta of Version 3 will be released this Summer, first on the Mac, and then on Windows a month or so later.
